you plug it in, then ubuntu mounts it and makes you a delicious cappucino

3G as wireless thing

most of them just show up as serial usb (ttyUSB0/etc) and then you get a special chat script to dial up with it. Some (like my novatel usb727) first show up as a cdrom drive, which I inject, then the serial devices pop up.

The one non linux compatible thing was registering the device, which I had to do on my mac. haven't needed a windows or mac thingie since.

... assuming you're talking about cellular wireless devices :P

Folks, "3G dongle" pretty universally refers to a wireless device. They're not that hard to make work under Linux, I've heard, they're generally serial devices.

I have nothing useful to say except I haven't heard the word dongle in a million years.

Same general idea, but I wanted to add that "dongle" always sounded like a dirty word to me and made me giggle a little. Also, I'm surviving off of twizzlers and diet dew as of late so a LOT of things make me giggle these days. Yay finals.

I don't know any of the details, but one of my officemates has a Novatel Ovation U727 working on Ubuntu.

Incidentally, you don't have a Palm-powered phone (like a Treo or Centro), do you?

Ah, I see. (The reason I ask about a Palm cellmodem is cause I heard stories that people got it working with Ubuntu. I'm gonna try that out myself)

As for island life - hey, I'm workin' on it! :) I made some posts, some moar are coming.
